A freight train carrying steel that derailed at Bowning last Friday delayed the passenger train between Melbourne and Sydney and interrupted some of the village’s residents from their morning routine.

Joe Stevens was eating breakfast at 8am when he noticed what he thought was smoke coming from the section of the track that passes his property at Rose Hill.
The Australian Rail Track Corporation said one of the train’s axles had broken, causing a wagon to come off the track. In the process, the wagon damaged some of the sleepers and pulled up a lot of dust from the ground, which looked like smoke at first. The wagon managed to stay upright.
Mr Stevens called the fire brigade; however, the Bowning Rural Fire Service duty officer, who also lives close to the train track, saw the incident from his property and was able to call off the alarm bells when he saw it was dust.
Luckily, the train driver noticed the derailment and was able to stop the train quickly.
The Melbourne to Sydney train was delayed by 25 minutes while repairs were made to the tracks and soon enough residents were able to go about their morning.
