Joe Buhagiar has been helping residents to lodge their tax returns at Yass Valley Library for 26 years.

Mr Buhagiar was a refugee who fled the Nasser Regime in Egypt between 1956-57 to England with his family.

Later in life, he moved to Australia with his wife Edie. They lived in Sydney and Mr Buhagiar worked as an accountant.

In 2000, the couple moved to Bowral and then to Yass to be closer to their son, a Murrumbateman resident.

Today, Mr Buhagiar offers his skills for free to stay busy, and to meet new people. It will be his 82nd birthday the day after his first day back at the library.

He will be available for appointments every Thursday from 10am-6pm, July 25-October 31, at Yass Valley Library.

Everyone has from July 1-October 31 to lodge their tax return for the previous income year.

Mr Buhagiar said everyone should make an appointment with the library soon and start organising their paperwork to bring with them.

All people need to bring is a MyGov Account and receipts for anything being claimed.

Those who don't have a MyGov Account will be able to create one in the appointment but will need to bring:

Retired librarian and ATO accredited tax helper Jane McEvoy will assist Mr Buhagiar with appointments this year.
