The Yass Roos were brought back down to earth by the Belconnen Magpies at Joe O'Connor Park on Saturday, falling to a 5.6.36 to 11.15.81 defeat.
The Roos claimed their first win, over the Murrumbateman Eagles, only the week earlier, and were looking to turn that into a run of good form.
However, Belconnen proved what a contentious and unpredictable season 2019 is likely to be by upsetting the home side and former grand finalists at their home ground.
Both sides now hold records of one win and three losses for the season, with the Roos at fourth and Magpies at fifth on the ladder.
The season is still far from over for the Roos, but this weekend's fixture against the Cootamundra Blues will certainly prove to be their biggest challenge yet.
The Blues are fresh off a 19.14.128 to 3.2.20 hammering of the Goulburn Swans in Goulburn last weekend, and show no signs of slowing down their rampant form in the weeks to come.
To beat the Blues, Yass will need to find a way to out-work their notoriously fit and fast opponents, who specialise in stifling pressure on the ball and lighting-fast blitzkriegs down the field.
Meanwhile, the Murrumbateman Eagles were plucked last Saturday by the Southern Cats at the Murrumbateman Rec Grounds, however it was their closest competition to date and nearly resulted in a wonderful victory over the reigning premiers.
Murrumbateman managed to keep up with their higher-ranked opponents for most of the match, and at three quarter time, the scores were level at 56 apiece.
In the end, it was only a couple of goals in the final quarter which separated the two teams and resulted in a 10.9.69 to 12.10.82 loss for the Eagles.
However, that didn't stop the club from congratulating its players for their efforts.
In what it described as "the closest game yet", the Eagles praised both teams for a match "played in fantastic spirit" and the locals for "fantastic support from the Murrumbateman Community for our Eagles with another 70 to 80 people cheering them on."
The Eagles have continued their rise, and most opposing teams have so far agreed that they will be a force to be reckoned with later in the season.
This Saturday, the Yass Roos will travel to Clarke Oval in Cootamundra for their match against the Blues. Meanwhile, Murrumbateman go to Holt, where they will play the Belconnen Magpies. Both matches will start at 2.00pm.
