Begun in 1912, the Triggs Bowl was first presented to the YLTC by AB Triggs Esquire in 1912. Triggs was, according to an article written by the club, "a noted accountant and grazier of the district who was especially generous to the hospital, social activities and sporting bodies in the Yass region."
It was the first time in many years that the bowl had been dusted off by the club, and the series against Bungendore proved to be highly competitive and worthy of commemoration with an engraving on the bowl.
The competition took place on June 1, which the club described as "a magic [sic] day for tennis."
Bright sun and complete absence of wind combined to allow the players to show off their skills in full.
The team from Bungendore were enthusiastic, and the 28 combined players (14 from each side) took to the courts at the Hume Tennis Club, following the rain which had left the YLTC courts too damp to use.
In a sign of the good spirits in which the tournament was played, "nobody complained about the rain nor having to play at Hume," the YLTC said.
All matches on the day were played in good spirits from both teams, and an abundance of treats for afternoon tea helped maintain the congenial mood.
In the end, Bungendore were the successful side and claimed the bowl. This is only in a metaphorical sense, in reality the bowl will remain at the YLTC, but will be engraved with a reminder of the result of the 2019 competition.
The reinstatement of the Triggs Bowl is yet another positive step for the Yass Lawn Tennis Club in 2019.
In February, Pru Goward's office (which became Wendy Tuckerman's following the Liberal Party's win in the state elections) announced $12,000 in funding for the YLTC to repair and upgrade its roof.
Once the construction is complete, the club intends to hold a celebratory luncheon in September.
However, the celebrations will not only be held because of the new roof. 2019 also marks the club's 120 year anniversary, and the club said that "members are keen to ensure the YLTC clubhouse and surrounds are welcoming for the upcoming celebrations and all other activities required of members of the Yass community."
The Yass Lawn Tennis Club is one of the oldest sporting institutions in town, and from the sounds of it, the club's plans for its 120th anniversary will certainly befit such a momentous milestone.
