The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted damaging winds in the region from August 8 to 11.

Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h, with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h, are possible for the Snowy Mountains and eastern parts of the southern ranges, including parts of the Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Illawarra, South Coast and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts from late Thursday afternoon or evening.

A series of cold fronts are expected to cross southeastern Australia from Thursday until Sunday, generating a vigorous west to northwesterly flow across New South Wales.

Wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h, are possible with showers and thunderstorms about the Riverina.

For Alpine areas above 1900 metres winds averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 120 km/h are possible. These winds may ease somewhat during Thursday afternoon, but are expected to reintensify on Thursday night.

Blizzards are likely for Alpine areas above 1500 metres, possibly lowering to above 1000 metres by Thursday night. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.

Locations which may be affected include Thredbo Top, Nowra, Bowral, Wollongong, Katoomba, Cooma, Braidwood, Wentworth, Barrington Tops, Perisher Valley, Wagga Wagga and Deniliquin.
