This year is a special anniversary for Landcare as it reaches its 30-year milestone. Landcare groups around the region have been marking the anniversary of when the late former PM Bob Hawke delivered his speech to launch the formation of the Landcare movement in 1989.
It is now the biggest environmental management movement in the country, with more than 6000 community groups and hundreds of thousands of dedicated volunteers.
We have our own pioneers who have driven Landcare across the region, in particular: John Weatherstone from Gunning; Eric Hurn and Doreen Wheelwright from Crookwell; Tony Morrison and Jenny Bell from Breadalbane; John Sutton and John Betts from Yass; John and Mary Walsh from Dalton; Bill Wilkes and Angus Gibson from Goulburn; and many hundreds more who've made such a great contribution to local Landcare and continue to work towards improving our local environment for future generations.
In its 30th year, Landcare continues to grow with new groups forming around environmental issues, grazing management, and ones dedicated to empowering young people: there is something for everyone.
