Every year, the Australian Red Cross encourages branches to get out their wooden spoons and whisks and hold a cake sale in October.
All of the money raised then goes back to the charity.
Yass Red Cross branch member Judy Patterson has held onto a 1930s cook book made by the Shoalhaven Presbyterian Women's Working Society.
Inside is her grandmother's feather cake recipe, which Ms Patterson will be making for the Big Cake Bake.
"One tablespoon butter beaten to a cream with half cup of sugar, add one egg and half cup of milk, and lastly one cup flour with one large teaspoonful of baking powder. Bake in a moderate oven ten minutes," the recipe reads.
While looking at the recipe, Ms Patterson recalled the reason her grandmother and grandfather, Mr and Mrs Reynolds, came to be in the Shoalhaven region.
"My Grandfather was the manager of the bank in Nowra," she said.
While the Big Cake Bake is about creating sweet treats for the town and fundraising, it's also about keeping favourite recipes alive.
Another branch member, Karen Williams, will be creating her popular nut free fruit cake for raffle.
The cake has been made well in advance to help the cake mature and will be decorated with a red cross in icing.
This year, the branch is inviting the community to bake something for the sale. All you have to do is drop your goods at the stall on the day.
Yass Red Cross' Big Cake Bake will be held on October 18, from 9am, at the street stall by Miller's Pharmacy.
