The well-known social fundraising platform GoFundMe is commonly used by people who create a page on behalf of someone else in a time of need.

Wagga was leading on the philanthropic scoreboard this year, based on the number of donations made per person, according to the platform's latest Year in Giving report.

Trailing behind were other cities such as Hobart, Ballarat, Launceston, Bendigo and Townsville. The top 10 is listed below.

This year, it was a Wagga man behind the fastest-growing GoFundMe page in the country to date.

Back in September, local real estate agent Dave Skow, who is an Australian Survivor super fan, created a page for the family of contestant Luke Toki after he lost out on the ultimate prize of $500,000.

Fans were disappointed when Mr Toki was voted out one episode before the grand final.

The former miner from Western Australia, dubbed King of the Jungle, had a clear motivation for returning to the show for a second chance.

His two boys are both on the autism spectrum and his daughter, who was born six weeks before Survivor started filming, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

In 48 hours, the GoFundMe page surpassed the reality competition show's half-a-million cash prize.

It was a "mind-blowing" experience for Mr Skow, who said "not in a million years" would he have thought it could be so successful.

"I was sitting in my house ... when the elimination came on and thought I would do a nice little deed and it blew up into a huge thing," he said.

The fundraising page received more than 16,100 donations raising $550,000.

It was the second biggest GoFundMe page in Australia.
