A 26-year-old Victorian man will face court after he was caught speeding at 10:30am near Berremangra by the Yass Highway Patrol on Tuesday.
He was driving at the speed of 159km/h in a 110km/h zone.
"The driver showed the effects of alcohol and was taken to Gundagai police station where his breath test returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.153," a police spokesperson said.
He told the police that he had had up to 20 beers.
Police assert that if allowed to continue, this behaviour would have ended in a fatality.
The driver was charged with drink-range driving and issued an infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by over 45km/hr.
His license was suspended on the spot and he is not allowed to drive in NSW any more.
The 26-year-old was issued with a court attendance notice.
