As part of this significant achievement the society is embarking on a strategic planning initiative that will take it into the future.
A project development grant of $5,975 from Museums and Galleries of NSW has enabled the Yass and District Historical Society to employ local consultants eleventwelve Pty Ltd to assist in developing a plan for the society.
As part of this planning process, two workshops were to be held, however with the necessary compliance of social distancing for the foreseeable future this is no longer possible.
Instead, members will be sent a series of questions by email or post.
The submitted information will be collated to give the consultants a basis for getting the planning process underway. The aim of the process is to set clear, achievable goals that are relevant to the society and the community for the next three to five years and to ensure that the legacy built up over the last six decades is constructively carried forward.
Yass is a growing, vibrant community with a fascinating past.
The Yass and District Historical Society, a voluntary organisation, has served the community and district well, collecting and recording its history and organising these resources into a valuable reference collection.
The Yass and District Historical Society runs the local museum located in the building two doors from the Yass Information Centre.
As well as the permanent exhibition, temporary exhibits bring to life significant and sometimes little known, people and events that have contributed to what Yass has become today.
Both the archives and the museum bring people to the town and serve to connect residents old and new to the community.
Whether people are searching out family history or just enjoying the ambience of a country town they bring business to the town.
Perhaps most importantly an understanding and appreciation of the past can stimulate a sense of identity and pride that is priceless in the world of today.
While both the museum and archives are presently closed, members will be sent a circular letter on a regular basis with articles of historical interest, sources and tips for keeping their research skills honed and ways to pass the time during our home-stay 'vacations' .
- We encourage all members to respond to our questionnaire and, even if you are not a member and have ideas to contribute, you are welcome to submit them to yassarchives@gmail.com
