Hundreds of residences and businesses to be linked for 6MW Virtual Power Plant

Residents and business owners in Yass Valley and Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council are eligible to receive up to $9,900 of discount on a battery installation as part of NSW Government funded virtual power plant project which is being rolled out across several NSW areas.

With a residential solar and battery installation, homeowners can expect reductions of up to 80 per cent on electricity bills over a year, depending on available roof space for solar panels and household energy consumption.

In August 2020, the NSW Emerging Energy program awarded a $5.4 million grant to SolarHub for delivering the Smart Distributed Batteries (SDB) project.

SolarHub, one of the largest solar panels and batteries installers in the South Coast region, will build a 6 megawatt Virtual Power Plant (VPP) with this grant.

Eligible NSW home and business owners can now receive a point of sale discount if they purchase a battery with SolarHub and join the Virtual Power Plant.

Benn Masters, CEO of SolarHub, believes this project will offer tangible benefits for a lot of people on the South Coast. "Residents will receive important savings on their energy bills, thanks to the installation of a battery on their property," he said.

"A VPP is also excellent for grid stability because it can instantly harness the power of multiple batteries to support power distribution when the grid is stressed by high energy demand or blackouts.

"Another key point is that more batteries in NSW means that we can store and use more of our solar energy production, which is obviously a win for the environment and for the community in general."

The Smart Distributed Batteries project is being deployed in the following NSW council areas:

  • Shoalhaven City Council
  • Eurobodalla Shire Council
  • Bega Valley Shire Council
  • Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council
  • Yass Valley Council (within 100km of Canberra CBD)
  • Snowy Monaro Council (within 100km of Canberra CBD)
