* Coronavirus hospitalisations are on the rise in Australia's biggest cities as the nation edges towards a first-dose vaccination milestone.

* Australia is expected to pass 70 per cent first-dose vaccination coverage for people aged 16 and above by the end of the week.

* Sydney's major outbreak continues to claim lives and cause serious illness with 1253 patients in NSW hospitals, including 231 requiring intensive care.

* NSW recorded 1127 new cases in the state's lowest for almost two weeks, but health authorities believe it's too early to predict a downward trend. Two deaths took the state's toll for this outbreak to 186.

* The expert in charge of reviewing Australia's quarantine system is keen to see home isolation for overseas arrivals in place before the end of the year.

AUSTRALIAN VACCINATION NUMBERS:

* There have been 23,078,749 doses administered in the national COVID-19 vaccination rollout up to Saturday, including 276,176 in the previous 24 hours.

* Of the total, 13,276,695 have been administered by the Commonwealth (an increase of 173,574 in the previous 24 hours).

* 9,802,054 have been administered by the states and territories, including 102,602 in the previous 24 hours.

* Nationwide, 68.5 per cent of people aged over 16 have received one vaccine dose while 43.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.

AUSTRALIAN CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Australia has reported 1605 local cases: 1136 in NSW, 445 in Victoria, 22 in the ACT and two in Queensland.

* Nine overseas-acquired cases were reported, eight in NSW and one in Queensland.

* The national death toll is 1102 : Victoria 826, NSW 242, Tasmania 13, WA 9, Queensland 7, SA 4, ACT 3. (Two Queensland residents who died in NSW have been included in the official tolls of both states).

GLOBAL CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Cases: at least 225,244,000.

* Deaths: at least 4,639,000.

* Vaccine doses administered: at least 5,719,029,000.
