Nearly three weeks after the fire that gutted the industrial arts and home science building, students returned to school on Friday December 14.
A group of students told the Tribune that, while having the time away from school was fun in parts, it felt good to be back.
“It has been a bit quiet and personally I didn’t get a lot of work done, so it’s good to be back in a way,” year 10 student Laila Kaffou said.
Year nine student Verdi Barberis enjoyed spending a lot of time at the local pool. He said it was nice, but he was also happy to be back.
“It was good volunteering with the year 7s and the primary school students, but a lot of my friends were in other places so the best thing about being back is just getting to see them.”
For year 11s it was simply business as usual in their time offsite.
“We stuck to the syllabus and didn’t miss out on anything really,” school captain Ben Wylie said.
“All the teachers were great so to be honest we don’t feel behind at all.”
Heidi Young, also school captain, thanked Berinba Primary School for being great hosts as well.
“They didn’t have to take us in but they did, and we really appreciate it. Everyone was so accommodating, especially the kids. I think they liked having us around too.”
Ben said the shock of the fire that forced the school to close is now wearing off.
“At first it was a big shock, but after such help from the community, we are moving on and getting back to business.”
Arson suspected
NSW Police have now confirmed to the Tribune that the recent Yass High School fire is being treated as suspicious. Police said they were no closer to finding a culprit, but would look at all possibilities.
