Yass
has fallen short of claiming its first Country Plate, stumbling at the final
hurdle against Robertson Burrawang at the weekend.
The
knockout competition finished with a match at Victoria Park, after Yass and
Robertson Burrawang had each registered five wins in a row to make their way to
the final.
The
locals got off to a poor start in good conditions, with openers Robert Field
and Adrian Waters making just six and seven respectively.
Captain
David Field and in-form batsman Daniel Poidevin steadied the ship somewhat,
both making 23, but once they were out Yass fell apart. Dean Roxburgh proved a
handful, taking four for 28.
Things
could have been a lot worse for Yass if not for a cameo by number 10 batsman
Mark Garland, who managed to scrape together 20 runs.
The
target of 114 never looked like it would be enough for Yass, with Robertson
Burrawang losing just four wickets in its chase. After Ben Wright took a couple
of wickets with the ball, he made a quick fire 31 and his opening partner, Matt
Arnull, guided his side the rest of the way, scoring 30 not-out.
Dean
Roxburgh also contributed 24 runs and with it, claimed man of the match
honours.
Yass
captain David Field said Robertson was simply too good in the end.
“They
just out did us with the ball a bit and were really good in the field. They
deserved it.”
In the
semi-final played on Friday, also at Victoria Park, Yass proved far too good
for Cobar.
Cobar
batted first and was able to amass a respectable 151. But the task proved a
relatively easy one for Yass’ best cricketers, reaching the total just four
wickets down.
In the
corresponding match played at Tim Doolan Oval in Harden, Robertson Burrawang
beat the Lower Clarence in a tight one. Chasing 121, Robertson Burrawang
scraped home with just two wickets to spare.
