Last Sunday, Federal Member for Hume, Angus Taylor popped out to the Royal Hotel, Dalton accompanied by his wife Louise and their children. The visit followed an invitation from Councillor John Searl. Mr Taylor said “I am visiting all of the small villages and towns in Hume over the course of this year, as I did before being elected, and I intend to continue doing this.”

Locals and district folk took the opportunity to air their issues and concerns. These included phone and internet blackspots with roads continuing to be a hugely important issue. Residents are interested in how regions like Dalton can grow and Mr Taylor said “My job will be to ensure that critical infrastructure, especially telecommunications, keeps up.” He added “The Council will need to look at whether the LEP needs updating”.
Another issue raised with Mr Taylor was apparent slowness in distributing the funds available from the Federal Government to community organisations for Anzac Centenary.
The good folk from Oolong Bush Fire Brigade were delighted with the turnout for their wood auction and raffle last Sunday. Brigade Captain Tery Hazell said there were more bidders than in previous years and thanked all those who donated wood and raffle prizes, supporters of the event and auctioneer, Nic Clancy.
Gunning Library’s Ros and Maree together with The Friends of the Library invite you to help create a remembrance poppy wall by making 500 poppies. A workshop will be held on August 8 at the Library from 1pm so please come and join in.
I was curious to read that Origin that runs the Cullerin Range Wind Farm is seeking some feedback on their community funding model. As it stands there are two community members, one host landholder, Council representative and someone from Origin. Taking a straw poll on how this has been running, positive responses so far, suggest that it is a case of “If it aint broke, why fix it” with recipients of the funds happy with the outcomes.
Amanda Robinson of Origin Energy has agreed to extend the deadline for community comment to Thursday August 28. Maybe I’m just getting old and cynical but I wonder if there is something we are not being told. Please send in your response just in case there is a nasty change in the bureaucratic wind or perhaps it is just Council’s Development Control Plan.

Nearly two dozen locals gathered together at the Gunning Uniting Church Hall on Monday to celebrate Christmas in July. The lunch was courtesy of Gunning Community Care whose staff members were delighted to be able to turn on a great event for their eligible clients.
I’ve got a few apologies to make. First up - at the time the Dalton Water Supply was opened in 1980, the Shire engineer was Jerry Bliss not Jeff – I must have misheard the name while I was chatting to Ralph Stone.
Next up is that there were mistakes in the captions of photographs last week. All those pictured were no doubt very surprised to find that they had been at the Old Hume Highway 31 event in Yass when in fact they had been photographed in the Gunning Shire Hall at the presentations organised by Rabobank, AWN and Tablelands Farming Systems.
