I note with a degree of satisfaction, the suggestion I made in 1998 when Mayor of Yass Shire of raising the speed limits on the Hume Highway has been adopted by NSW Roads Minster Duncan Gay.
My suggestion at the time was treated with amusement and roundly criticized by the then Editor of the Yass Tribune.
If the speed limit were raised to 120-130 km/h then the travelling time from Yass to the outskirts of Sydney would be just two hours, so bring the obvious benefits of that large economy so much closer to the Yass Valley LGA. Drivers would not be fatigued by the shorter travelling time and as Northern Territory figures show accident rates reduce.
Perhaps only certain sections of the highway would be suitable for the increase at this time and drivers would need to obey the rules and keep left unless overtaking.
