Because for them it's not the recognition or appreciation they're after but simply information.

Many are just parents who do what they do for love, and wouldn't have it any other way, so to have experts come and walk them through the incoming National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was far more useful than a pat on the back.

The light luncheon sponsored by Valmar Support Services, run by the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre and auspiced by Carers ACT, did just that.

Yass local Gerard Eades, whose 17-year-old son has Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, said it was an invaluable get-together.

"Yeah I came for the information on the NDIS, there are a lot of unknowns there," he told the Tribune.

"Being recognised is one thing but what we really need is help and this is about explaining what help there is for us, and so far we've received some very good information."

Mr Eades was also relishing the chance to chat with other carers.

"Yeah this is an opportunity to do that. Most people don't have any idea what being a carer does to your life in general so it's good to talk to people who understand."

Sharon Scott, from the Carers Respite Centre ACT, explained that there are a lot of carers unaware of the help available to them.

"It's so important that people know that there's support for them," she said.

"The support available is enormous and getting the word out there is what this week is about.

"Of course it's also about saying how fantastic they all are."

Transport was another hot topic at the Bowning cafe. Yass Valley Council is the only council in NSW that offers training on transport use.

Council's travel trainer Alison Beresford spoke about the options available and the need to provide information on how to use public transport.
