In an article (Yass Tribune, November 26) Angus Taylor, local member for Hume, used a photo opportunity to promote the Coalition's Green Army initiative. I understand that this is part of the Direct Action program which will compensate for the contamination of the globe's atmosphere by the unsustainable emission of greenhouse gases.
I sincerely hope that this program will be more durable than the other programs which have had funding directed to the rehabilitation of the Yass Gorge.
Some years ago "make work" money was spent building a walking track along the South Yass bank from flat rock towards the Yass Weir. It involved weed removal, planting trees, constructing a rock edged walking path with wooden picnic table with benches, and a stile over a boundary fence. The trees died from neglect, and the whole plan fell into disrepair and became unusable.
Later, more funds were allocated and the first section of this walkway was rehabilitated and stone steps, with a metal handrail, were built down to a clearing next to a swimming area. Aboriginal motifs were painted at significant areas. It became overgrown and impassible.
Next funds were allocated to clear blackberry which had infested the pathway. Some died, others thrived. The sign designated "Walking Track" fell over and was removed.
This repeated misuse of federal funds has resulted in no benefit to us and a cynical exploitation of the labour of young people who are unemployed through no fault of their own. They don't even see any positive long term benefits from their toil. The environmental benefits are hard to discern.
At least during the depression, money was allocated so that those who couldn't find work were given useful tasks such as the construction of the Great Ocean Road.
Could I be assured that this time there will be sufficient funds and interest from some level of government to ensure that there will be a follow up plan than will ensure that this time? The efforts of our youth will not just be exploited for political grandstanding.
