Murray cod: the water level continued to drop reaching a low of 56.1 per cent before the rains came and the outflow was reduced. The cod fishing remains tough, with the occasional smaller fish being caught. What has been concerning since the start of December is the reports of several dead Cod floating in open water the latest being a one metre plus fish near Cave Island. These deaths would almost certainly be the result of miss handling during capture and release. There would be fisherman that would have killed any fish over 60cm in the past that must now release the fish if it is 75cm or larger. The two main killers will be time out of the water and lifting the fish by the head. Our local fishing inspector Tony Day has stated to me that all fish outside the legal limits must be released immediately and fishermen may be fined if found with large fish that have been removed from the water for photo shoots.

Yellow belly: not a lot of reports over the past week but the weather has been very ordinary. Kieran reported 18 yellows from the trees around the slaughter yards taken on worms. There have also been a few good fish taken on plastics on the trees and cast crank baits. Bait fishing remains the best option targeting trees with worms and small yabbies. I have been hearing that shrimp have been harder to catch.

Redfin: the redfin are biting if you can locate the schools. My regular spot at Scrubby has given up fish over the last three weeks. Most fish are averaging about 20cm with the biggest being 32cm. Small plastic minnows bobbed or cast, on the bottom in around  six metres of water.

Carp: Plenty being caught on worms, corn and bread. Not hearing as many reports of them taking lures.
