3AW's Sports Today program reported on Monday night that White was set to be replaced by Clarke, who has not played in the Big Bash League despite signing with Sydney Thunder in 2012. He cut ties with the Thunder last year to concentrate on international cricket.
Any decision to rekindle his Twenty20 career would ignite speculation about the 33-year-old's international future, particularly in one-day internationals given they are generally played in the same timeslot as the BBL.
Fairfax Media last week reported the strong likelihood that White would find a new BBL home for next season given the Stars had not yet offered him a new deal.
Clarke is in Perth with the Australian team preparing for Wednesday's World Cup match against Afghanistan. The Melbourne Stars have not confirmed their interest in the Australian captain.
