A lot of people have asked me lately whether I’m feeling happy about the troubles in the Federal Liberal Party.

My response isn’t always what people expect.
Sure, I say, I prefer to see Labor ahead in the polls – but ultimately I see this situation as bad for Australia.
In fact, sad for Australia.
I thought it was bad for Australia when Kevin Rudd was removed as Prime Minister by the party room 30 months after winning office.
I thought all parties would learn the lesson that this was not the way to go.
I seriously assumed the Abbott team, above all others, would learn this lesson given how effective they were in attacking Labor on this very issue.
So for Liberal backbenchers to be trying to remove their leader after only 17 months in office was shocking and disappointing.
Government is a time for governing for the people of Australia.
Any time spent on internal fights and brawls is time and energy that is not spent on helping the country – it is stealing from the Australian people who pay their taxes and expect better.
What the Liberals are doing now is setting a terrible precedent.
If you try to get rid of your leader after 17 months, then what next? Will the next Liberal leader be given 16 months, 12 months, 4 months – or less?
After the failed Liberal spill motion three weeks ago, we were told that it was the end of the matter.
But now they are at it again – some of Tony Abbott’s own team trying to bring him down again, instead of governing.
Amazingly, the push seems to be on to bring back a former leader who a majority of the Liberal Party Room decided was performing so badly that he had to be removed.
A former leader who tried to destroy Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister based on fake emails.
Really, it is unbelievable that Liberal backbenchers, many of whom owe their positions to Tony Abbott, are now trying to bring back the person that Tony Abbott had to replace as Opposition Leader.
It would be funny if it weren’t so tragic.
But tragic it is. Because the Liberals are talking about themselves - and fighting amongst themselves - when they should be devoting every waking second to running the country.
So for the sake of the Australian people, let’s focus on the issues – and there are many. Health and education for all, regardless of wealth or income. Fair tax from multinational corporations. NBN for the Yass Valley. And more.
And the Liberal backbenchers can leave it to the Australian people to decide between their lot and a renewed Labor team at the next election.
