It’s not common to have a female brickie, carpenter, plumber or electrician, traditionally they are male dominated careers, with less than 25 percent of workers and apprentices female.

However Yass High School girls were busy breaking down those barriers this week taking part in a workshop to get hands-on experience.
The workshop was a part of the Supporting and Linking Tradeswoman (SALT), having run last week for 20 girls in years 9 and 10 from Yass High School.
The girls familiarised themselves with the types of tools used in various trades including carpentry, painting and decorating and they were encouraged to expand their horizons regarding possible career choices. The workshop was run by qualified trades-women from across the region.
At the completion of the day all girls had proudly completed their projects and were very keen to show off their work.
The Department of Education and Communities through Secondary Education-Senior Pathways is sponsoring SALT to run these workshops. It is one of a number of initiatives to support students in rural areas to consider career pathways after secondary education.
