While Masters’ Apprentices took out the Men’s A-grade competition last week, it was the performance of Jinxed in the Men’s C-grade competition that has touch football organiser Greg Smith excited.

The all-girls team made the switch from the women’s competition at the start of the season and against the odds they made it to the final in their grade, where they were eventually beaten 5-2 by the heavily-favoured Bulls outfit last Wednesday. Mr Smith said he was proud of how they went and how the opposition teams treated them.
“Obviously they were disappointed they lost but I said to them ‘well you’ve come a long way, that’s the first time ever a women’s team has played in a men’s comp and you haven’t just made up the numbers you’ve made the final in C-grade’,” he said.
Mr Smith expects the girls will stay in the men’s competition.
“I think they genuinely enjoyed themselves this year because it was always uncertain whether they’d win or lose and they were pushed by teams all the time especially when male teams were playing who didn’t want to get beat by females.
“One thing that came out of it was that the male players didn’t take offence to them playing and probably played harder to beat them which was good.”
In the final of the men’s A-grade Masters’ Apprentices edged Innapropriate Touching 3-2, in the B-grade the Stingers smashed the Blade Breakers 5-1, in the D-grade the All Stars beat the Hoonigans 2-0 and in the E-grade final 2 Deadly beat Sawneez 5-4 in a drop-off.
In the women’s competition Ninja Turtles beat We R Sure 2-0 in the A-grade, Winded beat Chicks of the Trade 6-3 in the B-grade and Poppa Bottles smashed Sonic Fitness Girls 7-0 in the C-grade final.
Mr Smith said he was happy with the 2014/15 season.
“I think it was one of the most even seasons,” he said.
“Obviously it’s hard to get it right with the grading, for example Pop A Bottle probably should have been in the Women’s B-grade, but you have to go on the results at the end of 2014 and that’s where they were sitting last year.”
