His mother sucumbed to the disease three years ago and in 2013 his grandmother also lost her battle with cancer.
It was at this stage, that Mr Johnston pledged to do something about it.
Ever since he has been growing his goatee and his beard, with the sole purpose of shaving it off this Easter weekend.
“I’m fairly limited, in so far as I don’t have the business prowess to start raising money but jumping on board with World’s Greatest Shave and the Leukaemia Foundation gave me an ideal opportunity,” he said.
“I have a hairy face, so I thought I’d take advantage of it.”
The special event is on this Saturday at the Woolies car park kicking off at 9.30am. There will be face painting, a jumping castle, buskers, raffles and a special sausage sizzle put on by Yass Woolworths.
Mr Johnston, who has also lost his step-mum and a grandfather to cancer, said he was more than happy to do his bit in raising awareness and money.
“I’ve not met one single person who can say they haven’t been affected by cancer … so it’s a worldwide thing and I thought this would be a good way for Yass to get involved.”
Mr Johnston said there are a few other locals that are sacrificing hair for the cause.
“Sabina from Woolies, who has a long blond plait, is going to cut that off and colour her hair which is a huge ask because I have no idea how long she’s had her long hair for.”
He said a couple of workers at Woolies were ready to shave their heads, as were a couple of students from Yass High School.
He said he was surprised about the amount of support he’d received from locals.
“It’s indicative of the Yass community ... everyone seems to pull together when required and this is no exception.”
If you want to donate, but won’t be in town this weekend, you can make a contribution to one of the collection tins at either the Woolworths Service Desk, Liberty Cafe, Thyme to Taste, Miller’s Pharmacy or Yass Medical Centre.
