Held today, Fatality Free Friday is Australia’s largest community-based road safety campaign.
An initiative of the Australian Road Safety Foundation, Fatality Free Friday calls for road users to make a promise to themselves, their family and friends to consciously drive safely and obey road rules.
Yass Valley Council Road Safety Officer Melissa Weller said Fatality Free Friday reminds us that road safety is a personal responsibility and spreads the message that each and every road user is the key to saving lives.
The campaign is more than just a single day. Whilst the target is to have a fatality free Friday, ultimately the campaign aims for longer term community change.
To date over 100,000 road safety pledges have been signed.
By taking the pledge you are promising that today you will:
- Remind your family, friends and workmates to take extra care on the roads;
- Put your lights on for safety;
- Be mindful to drive safely and follow the road rules;
- Not speed and will not drink and drive;
- Take care at level crossings;
- Slow down in the wet and drive to suit the conditions;
- Not tailgate other drivers and look as far ahead as possible;
- Wear your seatbelt;
- Not use your mobile phone while driving;
- Set a good example to your passengers by driving calmly and safely; and
- Take care as a pedestrian when crossing the road or street.
