Up against Belwest outfits Division 3 won 3-1 and Division 4 2-1.
The Division 3 ladies started out determined not to let Belwest get away from them and moving last week’s star striker Bec McLean into the already strong back line proved the best decision of the day. The Belwest team tried a couple of runs down the wing, but were held up by Renee O’Loughlan playing her 100th game for the club, and Amy Alley and Anna Buckman.
Dani Farthing played as the lone centre-midfielder and she really answered the challenge, never giving an inch and even taking some shots on goal. She was awarded Player’s Player for her efforts.
Every member of the team really stepped up and it certainly showed, with increased passing and strong control over the game. The women dominated play in the first half and Natasha Farnsworth and Victoria Alley pressured the Belwest backline, taking shots from all over the field. However, it was Amalie Birkhol who managed to find the back the net first, and she ended with a hat-trick after a great day out. Belwest had a few chances to equalise but goalkeeper Belle Green was on fire and kept the shots at bay. The one goal that Belwest managed was a long strike from the sideline.
The match was an important one for Yass, with Belwest close to the Redbacks on the ladder. Victoria Alley had a spectacular game in both division three and four, taking some amazing corners.
Coach Ingrid Davis was excited after the win.
"If we can continue to play the way we did on Sunday, we have a real chance at finals this year. The only thing that can stop us now is injury and of course that’s the one thing we can’t control," she said.
"The ladies are keen to take on Belnorth next week, who sit at the top of the ladder well clear of the rest of competition. It will be a tough game but I really believe that we can hold our own against them."
The Division 4 Redbacks played out a tougher game against the Belwest side, but they still managed a 2-1 win. They also dominated the majority of play but had a tougher time getting past the Belwest backs. Goalscorers were Ash Parker and Amalie Birkhol, with Maddison Douven only just missing a perfect header at goal in the second half.
The game certainly got a bit physical towards the end as players got tired, but the Yass ladies kept their heads high and didn’t let it get to them.
Denise Curtis and the backs held their line and didn’t let Belwest get near enough to take many shots. Their coach, Kath Farnell just kept telling them to play their game and ignore everything else, which worked beautifully and they held out to take the win.
The ladies travel to Kaleen on Sunday and will come up against Belnorth.
The men return to the pitch this weekend and will host Woden Valley. Division six kicks off at 1pm and division five at 3pm on Saturday.
