Around 20 creative year 6 students, with the assistance of teacher Ms Marple, created a plaque to represent the year. Using the technique of mosaic, the students secured pieces of white and black tile to a ceramic paver that read, ‘Year six was here’, and in pieces of broken mirror the letters ‘2015’.
Ms Marple said that although she helped with technique, the students came up with the concept on their own.
“It was something they all decided to come up with and they were really pleased with the design, it is a great representation of this year,” she said.
The remaining Year 6 students gathered in the playground in the mid-morning where a tree that had been partially donated by Dan and Dans Nursery and purchased by the school, was to be planted. It is the start of a new tradition of leaving a mark upon the grounds to be remembered for years to come.
The students took turns shovelling dirt and the plaque was placed in front of the tree.
Yass Primary School Principal Michelle Fahey said that she wanted the students to be a part of the tree planting day and decided that by doing so they could make it a special occasion.
Addressing the year 6, 5 and 2 classes present on the day, she remarked that this occasion was something the students could, when they were older, show their own children and remember the place where they had attended school and the special memories they had left behind.
