The exhibition will feature local artist Cathy Lee. Cathy Lee has lived in Binalong for 30 years.
As a child she lived by the sea in Bondi and she has strong memories of always wanting to draw, consequently Cathy spent more time drawing than doing her set homework. This was the beginning of a life-long devotion to her art; always dynamic and developing, always interesting and intriguing. Cathy has exhibited her works in the local area and has created many private commissions. Working on these private works is both a pleasure to Cathy and to her customer base.
As her children are now adults, she has both the freedom to explore her art and the time to create pieces that bring her joy. As she wakes in the morning the first thing she wants to do is paint - for her it is an unstoppable urge, a passion that gobbles up hours without her realising the time has passed. Often she has painted a work in her head before she has even started it on canvas. That passion and dedication to her art shines through in her works.
Family have always been important to Cathy and one of her earliest influences was her brother Al, who taught her how to use and see light and colour in everyday things. Largely self taught, she honed her drawing skills by using her children as subjects, mostly when they were asleep or watching TV because that was the only time they were still.
Cathy and her husband John travelled and worked through the centre and northernmost parts of Australia in 2012 - 2013 and this has had an enormous influence on her recent work. The colours of the Outback and Arnhem Land are now very much a part of her luminous palette. Cathy lights up when she describes these regions of Australia, "everything is so vibrant, the greens are so green, the red earth, the water, everything is so clear".
Exploring the faces of the people she has met on her travels, ordinary people with sometimes extraordinary lives and wonderful stories – have become a focus of her art. With great skill Cathy makes a study of both the joy and the hardship evident on her subjects’ faces and she hopes that her audience can empathise with her characters’ stories. Cathy's ability to capture light and use of intricate detail lure you into her subject's eyes - which is indeed a wonderful experience.
We are privileged and excited to have the opportunity to present Cathy's most recent works at the Binalong Spring Art Show.
BAG was established in order to promote the arts in our small village and surrounding region and support artists like Cathy. With a wealth of talent in the area, BAG aims to provide artists and artisans - both established and emerging - with a stage to showcase their work.
BAG members say they are amazed by the range, skill and vibrancy of the work that has been entered by artists aged from 6 years to 90 years of age - Binalong is truly alive with energetic and eclectic people eager to exhibit.
It will begin with a cocktail party on Friday, September 11 and be officially opened by Janet Dawson at this event. The exhibition will continue over the Saturday and Sunday and entry, on these days, will be free.
