Alice has been with the Friday Club since it began almost 12 months ago, she enjoys not only the different activities the club provides each week, but also the company.
“Actually the company is the best part,” Alice explained.
“Each week there is something different. We have had a violinist, councillors, aged care speakers and a bush poet came along one Friday.”
The Friday Club is dedicated to providing older people with opportunities for social interaction and to meet new friends in a welcoming and stimulating environment.
Friday Club organiser Steph Harding describes it as a way of providing opportunities for people to engage in community life.
“The Friday Club is a fun and engaging Club for older people where they can get together and participate in a range of activities to help them live independently in our local community,” she says.
“The activities are usually extremely engaging, I feel like I get a lot out of them.”
Last Friday the Club went to Lyn and Bob Teasdale's property in Bowning for their open garden.
The Club is run by a team of dedicated volunteers, funded by the Department of Social Services, managed by Yass Valley Home Living Support Service and supported by Yass Valley Council.
The Club meets on Friday 10am to 2pm at the Seniors Hall, at the Apex Units on Rossi Street in Yass. Transport can be provided by the 2582 Town Bus every second Friday. Members can bring their own lunch or order a simple meal. The cost for full pensioner is $10, part pensioner is $12 and non pensioner is $14.
