The 15-year-old Riach finished second in the 3000 metres foot race, third in the 1500m and fifth in the 800m at the ACT carnival held recently.

It means the Yass girl will compete in the 2015 Australian All Schools Championships as an ACT qualifier in the 3000 metre event.

The Campbell High School student also battles Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.

But Riach isn’t too phased and explains that she’s on a new drug that is working a treat.

“I wasn’t that sick but I’ve still noticed that I’ve got better since I’ve been on it,” she said.

Despite living with CF and taking large amounts of medication, Riach says she’s never really felt terribly affected by it.

“I’ve always liked running, soccer, little athletics so I think that shows that my CF hasn’t ever been that bad.”

In addition to this Riach has had her brother Nicholas, who also has CF, with her every step of the way.

“We have always been really sporty, which is great, and we’re now on this new drug Kalydeco together and it seems to be working really well.”

While Riach has never trained too hard for anything before, she’s thinking now might be a good time to start.

“The girl in front of me did a lot better in Canberra so I’ve got a bit of work to do, I’ll just give it my best.”

Riach, whose favourite subjects are PE and Mathematics, plans to work in the sports science field, become a personal trainer or become a coach when she graduates in 2018.
