We frequently hear the expression “checks and balances” to describe ways of controlling power. This was important in 1776 when the American revolutionaries were shaping how their country would be run; remember they were accustomed to the idea of a strong king or central person and wanted a way of controlling this person and so a system which slows things down a bit was adopted, with Congress and President able to thwart each other. As an example the stimulus package which saved Australia from the global financial crisis was emplaced quickly in Australia but was knocked back by Congress the first time, to America's disadvantage.
Joint replacements — what is next?
We know about hip and knee replacements and to some extent, the shoulder. Fingers are more difficult. The distal joints near the fingertips are a problem, with not much bone. The other finger joints have been successfully replaced. The thumb and index fingers are more complicated as they have to deal with twisting pressures as in turning a key. But all these will be developed.
Meat on the menu
The statisticians tell us Australia is growing at over a quarter of a million a year. For a meat producing district this must be good news. And if some are vegans, they can be accommodated too.
Prostate testing
Prostate cancer is a major cause of early death for men. The test for it is the PSA. People with a positive result can get a prostate biopsy and an operation if cancer is confirmed, which can mean that an early death can be avoided. If the biopsy is negative and no cancer is detected then there is no need for an operation, but some will develop complications from the procedure. But the PSA does produce some false positives suggesting a problem when there is not one, So who makes the decision to have the PSA test and if necessary the biopsy — the patient, with hopefully enough information.

New gourmet eating
Clementine restaurant has brought a new level of dining – interesting and tender food ( entrée $18, mains $30), pleasant service, fine local wines at $30. A bit noisy, like Sydney chic. Certainly the place to be seen.
Blurred vision – always important
The sudden onset of poor vision with a haze or blurriness is something to check promptly; some causes can lead to blindness. Often an examination with a slit lamp is needed - this is a special device for inspecting the eye and this means a trip to Canberra.
