Sun shining, no wind to annoy us, temperature reasonable - what another glorious Monday morning. I think perhaps there was a light frost. Must admit I was not up early enough to see much of it. One of the perks of old age, you can crawl out of the blankets when it suits you.
With the frosts around, time to shift the vulnerable pot plants to a covered area. Last year, I lost quite a few because of frosts but also earlier lost some from the extreme heat. I suppose it makes life interesting.
Alzheimer’s Australia information session
Libby Smith from Alzheimer's Australia has confirmed that she has arranged a free information session on Tuesday June 6 in the Binalong Hotel from 10am until 12pm. Libby has obtained the services of a Senior Rights Solicitor from Sydney who will speak on issues such as the making of a Will, Power of Attorney, Guardianship and Advanced Care etc. Those interested are invited to attend and meet Libby, the local Dementia Adviser, and learn about the services available for family support. Morning tea will be provided but Libby would like to know the numbers intending to accept the invitation. Her phone number is 6241 9881 and her email address is Libby.Smith@alzheimers.or.au. As a last resort, you could let me know and I could pass the message on to her. Libby has already had one information session in Binalong but very few people read the flyer so unfortunately there were only four who turned up.
The information to be offered really is essential for the elderly to be aware of.
Sport
Despite the wonderful weekend weather no sportsman wandered on to the golf course or the bowling green, as far as I know the only sport played was the football. On Sunday, the golfers travelled to Bigga for the small clubs pennant competition, which saw them lose three matches to two. Chris and Paul Glover were the successful players while Jason Saunders, John Lee and Michael Paterson were the losers. Christine Partridge won a trophy in the stableford competition, which is played in conjunction with the competition matches.
Positions so far are Boorowa first, Bigga second and Binalong third while Boorowa also led the stableford competition with Binalong in second position just ahead of Bigga. The next game will be at Clover Leigh.
A quote I came across recently from George Deukmejian, which seems rather relevant at present said, "The difference between golf and government is that in golf you can't improve your lie." (If you aren't a golfer, seek an explanation from someone who is.)
No bowling locally but Tommy Glover, Don Glover, Brian Queripel and Wayne Trethowan played in the Cootamundra Ex Services President's Day. They were happy to win the first game but a little downhearted to lose the second fairly easily. They did bring something home though, Tommy and Don both won raffle prizes.
School news
The school bulletin tells us that last week the students completed their NAPLAN tests. Parents will receive their child's results mid September.
On Wednesday, the staff and children had a small ceremony to plant a tree in memory of former principal Mr Bennett and remember all the things he had done for the school and the kids.
The students have been reminded of the level of behaviour expected of them in the classroom and the playground, showing respect for teachers and their peers, using their time wisely and completing their tasks on time.
Events coming soon for the school are the Open Day, Small Schools Cross Country and the Book Fair. Always a very busy place.
Red Cross raffle
The recent Red Cross raffle was very successful and thanks go to all the prize donors and those who sat in the cold to sell the tickets. Wendy Rowe won first prize, second went to John Baker, third was Don Glover, fourth to Russell Johnson, fifth to Helen Heat, sixth to Jenny Wales, seventh was Luke Cotter, eighth was Stan Walsh, ninth Bill Kosseris and last of all, Colleen Glover.
Until next time.
