Deputy State Coroner Elaine Truscott visits search site for body of Matthew Leveson

Police have been searching for the remains of the 20-year-old for the past six days in Royal National Park in Sydney's south.

Ms Truscott spent nearly two hours at the site and was shown around the area by Detective Chief Inspector Gary Jubelin and a team from the homicide squad.

Mr Leveson's boyfriend Michael Atkins, 53, led police to the  area in the early hours of last Thursday after confessing it was where he had buried the body in 2007.

Since then police have taped off  a site near McKell Avenue, Waterfall, as they use two excavators and police dogs to scour the dense bushland.

Mr Atkins was found not guilty of the murder and manslaughter of Mr Leveson following a trial in 2009.

In recent weeks Mr Atkins was compelled to give evidence at the coronial inquest overseen by Ms Truscott  but had been granted immunity from prosecution for any admissions he might have made.

After an intense week of questioning, Mr Atkins admitted he had lied when giving evidence at the inquest, which left him open to being charged with perjury and contempt of court.

Police used this as leverage and a deal was struck with the NSW Attorney General whereby Mr Atkins was given indemnity from prosecution if he revealed where he had buried Mr Leveson's body.

Mr Leveson's parents, Mark and Faye, have remained at the search site each day, surrounded by friends and family.

Mrs Leveson said "we will wait as long as it takes".

Police said they would return to the site at 7.30am on Wednesday.
