I just looked through 15 years of January articles I’ve written. They almost all look backwards and forwards and enjoy the slower pace that January brings to most of our lives.

I guess I start January with a big cleanup after Christmas and that includes not only my house, but my head. What did I learn this year? What have I incorporated into my life? What am I ready to let go of?
Then I move on to what will I change or accomplish this year? There is always an area to declutter. I know I feel better as I clear out things I really don’t need. My house feels much more peaceful to me when there is less stuff. Is that true for you? What else will I do to improve my environment? This could include a new garden bed, repainting or changing furniture.
Next I think about what I will learn this year? This could be a big thing, like a friend’s PHD or small like another friend’s determination to learn to juggle. At the moment my plan is to learn more about my ancestry computer program, My Family Tree. I have spent a number of days on this, but there is much more to do. I would also like it to export to a book, but unfortunately it doesn’t at this stage.
And the rest of January?
I will enjoy friends, the sun, peaceful times in a yard. I’ll do a little traveling, a little visiting and a little entertaining, and lots of relaxing. I’ll be playing all those summer songs of my youth and earlier. I just made a list and most involve the beach and sun – surprise, surprise:
- Beach boys: Kokomo, California Girls, Surfing Safari, Surfin USA, Good Vibrations
- Nat King Cole: Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
- The Drifters: Under the Boardwalk
- Johnny Rivers: Summer Rain
- The Beatles: Here Comes the Sun
- Cliff Richard: We’re all going on a summer holiday
- Harry Belefonte: Island in the sun
While I was looking at the music of past summers, I discovered Spotify. Yes, I knew it was there, but I hadn’t used it. It’s been wonderful. I’ve just started a playlist for summer tunes and another for foreign easy listening. How much fun was that! Then when I added the Spotify app to my phone; it was all there as well.
Summertime and the livin’ is easy. Enjoy the rest of summer while we roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer…
