He oversaw the introduction of possibly the most damaging environmental legislation in NSW’s history when he supported new land clearing laws that if enacted will accelerate climate change, decrease biodiversity and ultimately lead to more extinctions. Her predecessor was also criticised for lack of action on air pollution.

This is an issue that touches many, with illness from air pollution estimated to kill 3000 Australians every year. Minister Speakman was criticised for being soft on standards for air quality in coal-fired power plants, coal mines, and coal export facilities. Another tough challenge for Minister Upton is that last year NSW ranked the worst state for renewable energy, according to a Climate Council report.

I certainly wish Minister Upton the very best in facing these and many more tough challenges that come with the environment portfolio in a time where populist short term thinking trumps science and long term strategy. (I know, I said the T word). Sweating through our hottest January on record in Canberra, and with 2016 once again the hottest year on record, you would think might be enough to bring about a precautionary approach to climate change.

However, instead the Turnbull government talks about “clean coal,” which is a myth. Let’s face it, one person or even one government can’t face these sorts of challenges alone. It’s up to all of us to stand up and support what we believe is right. Biodiversity, clean air and water and clean energy should not be bargained for votes.

As well as letting our politicians know what we care about, we can do much as individuals. Much of the time common sense is the best solution. The rule of thumb, will it benefit or harm future generations, is a good one and one I sincerely hope our new environment minister will apply.
