The firefighting volunteers dedicated 17,691 hours in the period – an increase compared with the previous season. Yass Valley’s brigades attended 53 bush and grass fires – an increase of five compared with 2015–16.
“This is due to volunteers attending a number of campaign fires, for which we are thankful for their commitment.” Mr Osborne also praised residents.
“It was pleasing to see that the majority of residents acted responsibly on days of elevated fire danger and Total Fire Ban, adhering to our warnings and advice,” he said.
The most significant incident within the Yass Valley was the Mulligan’s Flat Road Fire near Sutton in mid January. The fire burnt a total of 524ha, with an emergency warning issued for Sutton.
Volunteers from Yass Valley brigades were also sent to assist at the Currandooley and Carwoola Fires.
