Geoff Alves was the guest speaker at the Yass Probus Club meeting on Thursday, April 20. His father was a grocer and Geoff said working in a grocery shop as a 10-year-old made him look for other things to do later in life. Nevertheless, he developed an affinity for many products his father sold and daily still eats Vegemite on his breakfast toast. The slide presentation captivated his audience, as Geoff expanded on the origins of so many popular grocery products.

Geoff then traced the respective histories of Kraft Foods, followed by humorous and informative sketches of Don Smallgoods, Heinz 57 varieties and MacRobertson’s confectionery. Character sketches of the various product inventors and owners were fascinating, when many of us merely took these products for granted as we consumed them!
The next meeting, chaired by Yass Probus president Monica Case, is on Thursday, May 18 at 10am at the Soldiers Club, all welcome.
