“The line was right there,” said Suckling. “I saw the biggest gap and thought, I have to score this!”
Having gone behind early in the match through tries to Nirvana Ngan-Woo and Dorothy Carroll, the Magpies dug deep to fight their way back into the game.
However, after levelling the scores at 8-8 apiece thanks to a Hollie Massey try and a penalty, the Dragons took the lead once more through a penalty of their own.
Determined to keep their season alive, the Magpies fought their way back for the second time in the match with Suckling latching onto a grubber kick and sending the crowd into raptures.
“I knew we were going to stick it to them all the way,” Suckling said. “I knew we had it in us.
“So many times I thought we were going to score but Valley Dragons held us up the whole time. I put it to our team, we got the quick play the balls, we got down there and we beat them down in their own half.”
Yass will take on the Goulburn Stockmen in next week’s preliminary final after the Stockmen lost to the Queanbeyan Blues 34-10 with Yasmin Meakes and Shaenice Allan scored four and three tries respectively.
Having gone behind in a match for the first time this season, the Queanbeyan Blues rallied and constantly targeted the edges of Goulburn’s defence.
“It was just something that worked and we adapted,” Meakes said. “They have big forwards as well, so they were sticking it to our forwards.
“Once we started scoring a few on the outside edges, we kept doing it.”
The win sees the Blues book their place on grand final day which takes place in a fortnight’s time.
“It’s really exciting considering it’s the first women’s rugby league competition in Canberra," Meakes said. "That’s really exciting to be a part of.”
The Magpies will take on Goulburn in their preliminary final this Sunday in Queanbeyan. The match will take place at Seiffert Oval, and will start at 12:10 pm.
The winner will take on minor premiers Queanbeyan United on Sunday the third of September, again at Seiffert Oval in the final from 12.10pm.
