Cooma Cottage to reopen after winter renovation

Gutters and downpipes have been replaced, walls have been replastered and the electrical system has been upgraded.

As a heritage building that is looked after by the National Trust of Australia (NTA) NSW, Cooma Cottage’s property and facilities manager Stephen Buckland said “these works have been undertaken in a heritage-sensitive manner, wherever possible”.

“Further painting and finishing is planned for coming months,” Mr Buckland said.

As well, following a call for public interest in June this year, a new local volunteer-based management committee will now oversee the day-to-day running of the property’s events and activities.

Susan Bell has been appointed chair of the committee and Bimbi Turner as deputy chair.

NTA NSW director of properties Richard Silink said that while Ms Bell and Ms Turner would be supported by many “wonderful local volunteers who have put up their hands already, there are still a number of key committee vacancies that need to be filled”.

“These include treasurer and secretary,” Mr Silink said.

The committee is also looking for volunteers to assist with a range of other functions, including event management and group bookings, fundraising, management of the house collection and expanding the range of educational offerings at the property.

A new shop has also opened at Cooma Cottage. It has a unique range of beautifully designed products and gift items, with an emphasis on Australian-made and a focus on the local landscape and history.

All entrance fees and sales at the shop contribute to the update of Cooma Cottage.

Cooma Cottage was the home of Hamilton Hume (1797–1873), the first Australian-born explorer.

Hume bought the cottage and the 100 acres for ₤601 in 1840 and lived there for the rest of his life.
