Time to Run Y'Ass Off again

The unofficial president of Yass Runners (local group behind the event) is hopeful that the success of the inaugural event last year will translate into more participants and community support in the 2014 edition.

"We'd like to think that it will get bigger and better every year," he said.

"It was so well received last year and the feedback we have had since it was run has all been positive so yeah we expect it to be big again."

This year the Yass running event has been pushed forward a month to September 27 as not to clash with another running festival. But other than that, it will be a carbon copy of the day that attracted over 650 participants and a host of sponsors in October last year.

"We haven't changed the courses (2.5km, 5km, 14km and half marathon) because everyone we spoke to said leave it," Douglas told the Tribune.

"There is no question the longer courses are a test, the hill on Grampian Street for instance is brutal but everyone said that's what makes the Yass event unique and what will keep bringing people back."

The Elite Energy backed event, will this year look to attract more families and children.

"Yeah we want to emphasise the 2.5km fun run, because it's a great way for families to get involved. It's not just about individuals competing in the half marathon or anything like that it's a family day and a chance for the people of Yass to get active in a fun and social environment."

There will be a jumping castle, face painting and a number of stalls.

The smooth running of last year's event came down to the tireless work of volunteers and Douglas said he expects another avalanche of support from the town.

"That's the great thing about Yass, everyone gets behind these community events and you're never short of volunteers. This year we've even got schools on board, with Mt Carmel and Yass High keen to help out.

"And of course none of this could be possible without the support of Yass Valley Council and our other major sponsors Yass Wellness Centre, Classic Constructions and Yass Pharmacy."
