The Aussie Hotel Yass Roos have repeated their 2013 performance and finished second in the AFL Canberra Division 3 competition. Minor premiers, the Cootamundra Blues, proved too strong for the Roos in Saturday’s Grand Final, running out winners 18-5-113 to 11-7-73.

The effort of playing every weekend of the finals, took its toll on the Roos and they could not keep up with the fit and rested Blues.
The damage was done in the first quarter when Cootamundra set about establishing a commanding lead. The Roos found it difficult to stem the tide and found themselves down 9-1-55 to 2-1-13 at the first break.
In the context of this game that was always going to be a tough gap to close. To the Roos credit, from this point in the match they kept with Cootamundra and actually outscored them but it was all too little too late.
Cootamundra was a worth winner, with superior fitness winning out on the day. Best players for Yass included Toby Serafin, Nick Burridge, Jak Willcox, Marc Brooks, Simon Goyne and Daniel Smith. Goal scorers were Simon Goyne (3), Jak Willcox (3), Cam Attwell (2) and Marc Brooks, Ben Serafin and Adam Forth also claimed majors.
It is interesting to note that the final five finished the season in the same positions as at the end of the home and away matches. Ainslie was first to be eliminated finishing fifth and Cooma was defeated by Yass to finish fourth. Despite beating Yass in the qualifying final, Goulburn was unable to repeat the dose in the preliminary final and had to settle for third. And of course minor premier's, Cootamundra, took the spoils over Yass.
So now the attention turns to Presentation Night, which takes place this Saturday September 20 at the Yass Golf Club. A buffet dinner will be served from 6pm followed by the all-important awards for the 2014 season. There is plenty of speculation about who might be the Best and Fairest this year with most people predicting a close race between several players. I could probably name at least six who should be in the running (but I won’t). There will also be a Player of the Finals count along with all the usual awards.
Bookings can be made by calling Katie Brooks on 0439 864 303. Cost is $30 per person (children $5). All are welcome to join the Roos and see out the 2014 season. Come along and hear the stories of the season, celebrate the award winners and get the low-down on next year’s plans.
I’ll see you at the dinner. Go the Roos!
