Member for Goulburn Pru Goward announced on Monday a NSW Government commitment to fund the comprehensive redevelopment of shared recreation facilities at Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds.
Ms Goward said she is delighted to announce $550,000 toward the project.
“This is great news for the Murrumbateman community and surrounding region and will mean new equestrian facilities, an upgraded sporting field with new irrigation and turf, and new basketball and netball courts,” Ms Goward said.
“Currently, 20 active community groups and clubs utilise the one recreation ground with sporting clubs sharing the same field as the equestrian events, not ideal in any case.
“The proposed upgrade will promote participation in sport and recreational activities and we'll enhance community integration, cohesion and social development.
Mayor Rowena Abbey is thrilled with the funding announcement and said that it is a huge win for Murrumbateman and the Yass Valley, she thanked Ms Goward for reviewing council's application and for lobbying the Premier.
“Basically, what needs to happen is a separate area for the horses and equestrian, so that when the cricketers play their balls aren’t bouncing into the holes and the grounds are maintained properly,” she said.
“We will also look at upgrading other facilities and amenities.
“The plan was put together by Murrumbateman Progress Group and Yass Valley Council, in an application made a year or two ago, with grants funding we did not receive."
Ms Abbey said that there has been great commitments from both sides and the Yass Valley is being recognised as an important part of the electorate.
Briony Barac, stall manager of the Murrumbateman Village Markets said the funding will be a huge boost for the community.
“I have long imagined the Recreation Grounds abuzz on Saturday mornings, upgrading the recreation ground and sporting facilities would create a great opportunity for families to unite at junior sport, catch up at the Village Market,” Ms Barac said.
Ms Goward said the commitment was only possible because the NSW Liberal and Nationals have repaired the state Budget, and got the economy moving again.
