The Aussie Hotel Yass Roos played the Goulburn Swans on Saturday. Although the Swans came away with the win, the Roos backline put in a mammoth effort to limit the damage on the scoreboard. The final score Goulburn 12.9(81) to Yass 4.4(28) looks like a comfortable win, but this is the first time in more than five games that Goulburn has been restricted to less than 100 points.

The Roos defence is the second best in the competition behind Goulburn while in attack we rank third with Goulburn and Cootamundra ahead. In this match the forwards just couldn’t crack the Swans defence enough. A good first quarter by Goulburn gave them a small buffer at quarter time; 4.2(26) to 1.2(8). Steady pressure kept them ahead for the rest of the game.
The Swans threatened to run away with the game in the third quarter when the Roos failed to add to their total. Despite a wealth of possession the Swans came up against the resolute Roos backline and only managed three goals and four behinds for their efforts. The Roos never gave up and it was a very entertaining match.
The Roos still need to work on converting more of their inside 50 opportunities into scores. The Swans defence was up to the task and managed to turn the possession over before a scoring shot was possible for the Roos.
Backline players Adam Forth, Steve O’Brien, Jon Randles and Darren Pfeiffer featured in the best player listings. Ben Willersdorf, Matt Bosustow and Aaron Wilson also performed well. The Roos still hold fourth spot narrowly from the Tuggeranong Hawks.
Next week’s match is another home game for the Roos. They will take on Ainslie at Joe O’Connor Park from 2.15 pm. Hopefully Ainslie will make the journey as it has become apparent that the two Canberra teams seem to struggle to get numbers whenever they are on the road which has resulted in away-game forfeits. This is a bit unfair for the country teams who then miss out on home games that are valuable for club supporters and sponsors.
This scheduled match will also mark another milestone for Shane Lees, when he will run out for his 100th game for the club. Shane, who has been captain and coach in past years, delayed his retirement this year to achieve the milestone. Get along and cheer him on as the Roos aim for victory to celebrate the milestone in fitting style.
