The two local studs, Lualto Alpacas and Marchmont Park Alpacas have both been breeding alpacas for over 10 years. The 46 white breeding females shipped to Tasmania consisted of 36 from the two local studs and another 10 from the Burra area. They were loaded onto a stock transport in the early hours of Thursday morning and transported direct to Melbourne where their float was shipped across to Devonport and unloaded at the new owner’s property within 24 hours of leaving Yass. The new owners have purchased a total of 100 white breeding females from the mainland to produce fibre for their new business venture.
The shipment to Tasmania followed on from an earlier shipment to China of Australian alpacas where Lualto Alpacas had 15 females and five males selected in a shipment which consisted of approximately 500 alpacas. Marchmont Park Alpacas have had ten alpacas accepted for another export to China, with these animals now in quarantine in Victoria awaiting shipment.
Both studs believe that the animals produced in the local area are of high quality and consider the Yass Valley to be ideally suited to farming alpacas. Anyone wanting to diversify their farming activities should seriously think about alpacas as an alternative.
