In 2008 Yass Valley Council identified the need to develop a transport interchange in the form of a park and ride facility to assist with the transfer of commuters between Yass and Canberra. Yass Valley Council was successful in securing a $380,000 grant from Transport for NSW (NSW Government) for the construction of the facility. Council also committed an additional $100,000 to the project to address longstanding drainage problems from the creek behind the development.
“This new facility is designed to encourage greater use of existing public transport systems in Yass,” mayor Rowena Abbey said.
“Four possible locations were earmarked for the construction of the Park ‘n Ride facility, with the community deciding on Lead Street. The new facility includes 30 car parks, four disabled car parks with shared zones, three long vehicle bays, bus shelter with seating, bike racks and solar lighting.”
As a result of the Park ‘n Ride facility opening, the bus stop currently located in Comur Street near the intersection with Polding Street (outside Woolworths) will be closing from Friday December 4.
Transborder services relocated to Park ‘n Ride:
- Route 981 services to and from Canberra
- Route 982 services to and from Canberra
- Wombat school bus
- Emu school bus
- Eagle school bus
