From the information provided, the Tribune staff mapped out where these reports were coming from (see map below).
Users gave descriptions of rattling windows, a great boom like thunder and sounds like a truck hitting the wall.
One resident however was right at the heart of the quake.
On Wednesday the Yass Tribune Facebook page felt the full impact of the Wee Jasper earthquake with over 20,000 people visiting to see what had occurred. Users subsequently reported feeling the quake from Binalong to Tuggeranong in the ACT and all the way out to south Goulburn.
It was a 3.2 magnitude earthquake that was recorded at Wee Jasper on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Geoscience Australia, the quake occurred at about 4pm at a depth of 8km and caused houses in Yass to rattle and shake.
Geoscience Australia seismologist Emma Mathews said the earthquake was reported to her by more than 90 people, some as far away as Queanbeyan.
"Someone in Dunlop heard a large bang then a rumble and then their chair shook," she said. "In Chifley they said it sounded like deep thunder while in Monash they heard a slight rumble."
Yet in Yass, one resident described it like a ‘b-double going over corrugated iron bridge’.
Ruth Jones lives close to the epicentre. The Doctors Flat Road resident described the experience “like a boom”.
“What was THAT,” a startled Mrs Jones remembers thinking. “It felt like something had hit the house. I raced outside to see what was going on, but couldn’t see anything. I thought maybe Roger Kershaw, who was doing some earthworks, had done some blasting. Then it happened again. My nephew, who hadn’t felt a thing while he was driving out here, checked and there was no blasting.”
Mrs Jones remembers the last time a tremour hit the area, some 15 years or so ago. “It was much more impactful than last time. You couldn’t miss it,,” she said.
Ms Mathews said she felt the quake herself but dismissed it as a low flying plane before feeling vibration in her desk.
"It's not uncommon to have earthquakes in the Canberra area and we had a larger one close to Wee Jasper in 2012 – it's an active area," she said.
"This was a minor earthquake although it was close to populated areas and that is why it was felt throughout Canberra.
"More recently we have had some activity in Bredbo there was an earthquake in the Namadgi National Park not long ago too."
Ms Mathews said a 2.2 magnitude aftershock was recorded shortly after the earthquake.
