The promise of a nice sunny day has faded quickly with the usual dull and dreary conditions prevailing once again. Seems to be a Monday morning special. Thankfully the weekend was pleasant enough though, for most people, it was not a day to discard the winter woollies.

The fine conditions allowed the men's annual golf tournament to go ahead but once again the numbers were disappointing as most clubs in the area seemed to have important events on, e.g. the men's championships in Harden. Young also had a big day programmed. On Saturday the only visitors, Brian and Val Brooker, won the Ambrose event on a countback from Helen and Peter Curtis. Christine and Bart were the handicap winners. Helen won both the ladies nearest the pin and the longest drive while Tony Barton won the men's longest drive and Paul Glover won the men's nearest the pin.
On Sunday there was one visitor from Young, one from Clover Leigh, eight from Boorowa and the other few were locals. The men were grateful for the support from the visitors and especially from the Boorowa club. Michael Paterson won the main event from Mark Grigg with Andrew McGrath the handicap winner at Tony Blair the runner up.
Robert Dunwood fired off two good shots on the 4th and 6th holes to be nearest the pin on both and Robert Styles showed form to win on both the 11th and 14th holes. Zac Lee won the longest drive on the 7th and Michael Paterson proved his ability with a win on the 15th..
The ladies are hoping that a fine day will attract players for their tournament on 11th September where the 18 holes round will begin at 10-00 am.
September 24 and 25 will see a new event played on the local course which they have titled "Binalong Sand Challenge". They are asking for entries and fees to be sent in by September 21. 18 holes stableford rounds will be played both days. There will be a food and drink cart throughout the weekend and there will be a dinner on Saturday night. Older resident were saddened to hear that former local lady, Rayma McKeig (nee Toms) had passed away. Rayma was born and raised in Binalong but moved to Yass a few years ago.
We had the privilege and pleasure of attending a 60th wedding anniversary party for Pat and David Walker on Saturday night. Daughter Julie organised it all by phone from Queensland and believe it or not, all those invited somehow managed to keep it quiet so it was very much a surprise for them. Pat and David were very involved with the golf club here before moving to Harden when David retired from his farm management job at Galong after 47 years. Our kids roamed the golf course together when they were young so it was great to catch up with them all. Congratulations again to Pat and David.
As I write this the local school kids are testing their soccer skill against the Nangus team at Harden and those not in the team are cheering for them. On Friday Charlie, Oscar and Jack P and Jack T are off to the Riverina Athletics carnival, competing in several events. Footsteps Dance is off for the next two weeks because the teacher is ill. The next lesson will be on September 7.
