It is no secret that I don’t like candidate groups in local government elections and prefer to see people vote below the line for the individual(s) they want to represent the community on Council, but the political experts tell me that, once there, we are burdened with groups forever.

I am somewhat heartened then that, with Group E getting over 25 per cent of the primary vote and Rowena Abbey easily securing the largest “below the line” primary vote of all 32 individual candidates, voters in Yass Valley have supported the stability, balance and diversity of Group E over the clones in Groups B and C and given Rowena a mandate to carry on her work as Mayor.
Let’s not waste time reflecting on the less than exemplary tactics of some other candidates and groups, as they ultimately got what they deserved, but instead be grateful that enough voters saw through them to give us the result we needed at this very important time for Yass Valley.
As I write this the final composition of the Council is unknown as preferences have not been distributed, but the nine newly elected Councillors will meet on 28 September to choose our Mayor for at least the next 2 years. The community has spoken and made it an easy decision.

Mental health
Bravery comes in many forms. There is the bravery of the men and women who serve in our armed forces who knowingly put their own life at risk in defence of our country. And there is bravery in asking for help and bravery in asking someone you know if they need help, no matter how uncomfortable that conversation.
We all need to be brave and these conversations can be difficult. Suicide and mental health are issues for everyone in our society, including our veterans. On World Suicide Prevention Day, my message is that help is available now and if you think you need it, or someone you know needs it — please ask for help. Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service can be contated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1800 011 046 or visit http://www.vvcs.gov.au/ to access free.
