In the past 12 months the Yass unit has responded to 137 requests for assistance during storm and flood events and other emergencies, a significant increase on previous years.
“We have 40 volunteer members from a wide range of ages, backgrounds and fitness levels who respond 24/7 to emergency callouts,” Yass Unit Controller, Kurt Bailey said.
“Callouts include flood rescue, search and rescue, and all kinds of storm damage including trees on houses and cars. While most callouts are local, the team also assists with out-of-area requests such as the major storm incident currently in Parkes, or last year in the Hunter Valley.”
The unit will hold an open night on Tuesday, November 8 at 7pm at the Yass Unit headquarters, where community members can see the unit in action, meet the team, have their questions answered and fill in a volunteer application.
“Some in the community may only think of us when the weather turns, but we provide training every week to make sure we are ready to assist in any emergency. The open night will be a great opportunity for people to see how we prepare behind the scenes, and learn what it takes to be a volunteer,” he said.
To equip members to deal with flood and storm emergencies the SES offer comprehensive training. New members have many opportunities to get involved in the action in with chainsaw courses, flood boat driving, first aid and flood rescue. If the front-line action isn’t your thing, there are plenty of valuable behind the scenes roles.
“There is something for everyone,” he said. “If you want to climb on roofs and cut down trees there is plenty of that. Or your thing might be working the radios and managing communications.”
“If you have some spare time and would like to be involved in this valuable community service, I’m sure we can find you a niche that fits.”
