The 2017–18 campaign will involve three cycling routes:
- Melbourne to Sydney: September 2–13
- Sydney to Brisbane: September 23–October 4
- Melbourne to Cairns: December 5–January 18
The inaugural campaign in December 2016–January 2017 involved only the Melbourne–Cairns route, which included an overnight stay at the Yass Community Baptist Church in December 2016.
Director Rita Nehme said she remembered the giving spirit of the Yass community.
“From the moment we rolled in, we were very welcomed. To have the community embracing us was great. It was the only place where it seemed like the whole place came and cooked food for us,” said.
Ms Nehme also praised Pastor Nick Barber for providing a place to stay and Sophie Winterbourne, Yass Rotary Club, for organising a food truck.
For the 2017–18 rides, Nehme said Yass’ central location is ideal for local riders.
“We want to have a few riders from Yass since it is between Melbourne and Sydney, so we think it would work for them.”
Participants will obtain training beforehand. “Our riders are not elites. Some have never done a long-distance ride before, so any person who would like to contribute to the cause and who want to be adventurous can join,” Nehme said.
Steer North and its cycling events were founded by Nehme and James Helal to honour James’ brother Mike who died from a rare form of bone cancer.
In January 2017, the charity’s 20 riders completed the 4000-km Melbourne-to-Cairns journey and raised $100,000 for the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
“We couldn’t have done without the incredible support from the local communities like Yass,” Nehme said.
Registration closes on Friday, March 31.
